LIV Golf star and 2020 US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau has explained how he and 15-time major winner Tiger Woods shared the same skill when learning how to play golf
Bryson DeChambeau has revealed that he began learning to play gold left-handed – an ability he shares with Tiger Woods.
Before departing to join LIV Golf in 2022, DeChambeau won eight events on the PGA Tour after turning professional in 2016. The 30-year-old won two events since joining the tour last year and was one of the biggest golf stars to join the Saudi-funded breakaway league.
DeChambeau won his maiden major championship in 2020 at the US Open held at the Winged Foot Golf Club in New York. During an interview with the Good Good podcast, DeChambeau disclosed that he initially learned to play golf with his left hand before transitioning to his right.
This is a skill that he shares with Woods, who also began playing golf left-handed when being taught by his father, Earl. DeChambeau has told the story of how he began playing golf left-handed and why his father, John, is the reason for the switch to become a right-handed golfer.
“I started grabbing a golf club when I was as young as I could start walking pretty much, and I started swinging left-handed much,” said DeChambeau.
“Very similar to what Tiger Woods did with his dad. Tiger swung left-handed first, I don’t know if anybody knew that. He swung left-handed mirroring his father, because he would look from face on and it would look like he was left-handed to him.
“It was the same thing that I did, I grew up swinging it left-handed initially for the first couple of days. And then my dad turned me around, and I started hitting right-handed, and I just became better with the right hand.”
DeChambeau won two of the final four events of the 2023 LIV Golf season to climb up to fourth in the overall standings. The former US Open champion’s victories at Greenbrier and Chicago helped his team, Crushers GC, compete for the team championship
While the individual title was won by Talor Gooch, the team championship was won by DeChambeau and Crushers GC. DeChambeau was captain of the team that featured Charles Howell III, Paul Casey, and Anirban Lahiri.
LIV’s 2024 season is scheduled to begin in February, and DeChambeau will be competing for both the individual and team titles. But when the New Year arrives, DeChambeau will have a new opponent in the league.
After agreeing to a £450 million contract with LIV Golf, Jon Rahm will participate in the league in 2024. Rahm’s team affiliation is still unknown; the first competition takes place in Mayakoba, Mexico on February 2.
