McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has vowed to push Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari “even harder” in F1 2024, the team working “around the clock” to make that happen.
McLaren’s incredible journey in the F1 2023 season was undoubtedly the most heartwarming tale of the year. They transformed from a state of despair to pure joy, ultimately securing a commendable P4 in the Constructors’ Championship.
However, this remarkable achievement has also raised the bar of anticipation. Numerous experts are now predicting McLaren to be the closest challenger to the reigning Red Bull team in the upcoming 2024 season.
A “formidable” task awaits McLaren in 2024
Brown has cautioned that despite the immense amount of work happening at McLaren’s headquarters in Woking, it might still not be sufficient to overthrow the established top three teams in Formula 1.
“As we tirelessly work on our 2024 contender, our aim is to build upon the progress we made this year and exert even more pressure on our rivals in the coming year,” Brown stated.
“We anticipate a formidable challenge in the upcoming season as we strive to narrow the gap to the front-runners.
“All teams are engaged in a fierce pursuit of car development and increased speed, both on and off the track. However, our team will confront this challenge with our customary determination and unwavering commitment.”
Mercedes, Ferrari, and Aston Martin certainly didn’t make it easy for us, but we gave it our all in every race and on every lap. This led to an incredibly exciting finish, where the final positions in the FIA Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship were only determined in the 23rd and last round of the season.
It’s worth noting that this season saw an unprecedented achievement, with five different teams securing seven podium finishes. This just goes to show how competitive the grid was this year.
Lando Norris’ positive remarks at the Abu Dhabi season finale further fuel our optimism. He hinted at even “bigger changes” coming to the car next year.
According to Norris, we can expect more significant changes compared to the previous year. He believes that we are now in a position where we can address multiple aspects of the car simultaneously.
In the past, when we were struggling, we had to focus on one specific area to make the car faster. But now, we are in a much better position. We can pay attention to the finer details that we haven’t been able to improve upon in the last five years. These are the details that I, as a driver, would love to have more of and that suit my style.
With our improved capabilities, we can now prioritize these areas and work on enhancing them. This will have a positive impact on our qualifying performance, race pace, and overall competitiveness.
It’s amazing how small changes can make a significant difference. By focusing on these details, I am confident that we will have a very impressive and consistent car next year. That’s our main goal, and we are determined to achieve it.
