Dr. Helmut Marko, a key long-term figure in Red Bull’s Formula 1 success, faces uncertainty regarding his future role within the organization. Amid rumors of a power struggle between Marko, 80, and team boss Christian Horner, speculation about the future dynamics at Red Bull is rife.
In an interview with the Osterreich newspaper, Marko, who is known for his influential role in guiding the team and his sometimes tough methods and personality, revealed that discussions about his position are on the horizon. “There will be discussions this week,” he mentioned, hinting at potential changes that may be coming.
The paddock is buzzing with rumors that Horner aims to consolidate power over both Red Bull Racing and the newly rebranded Alpha Tauri team, now listed as ‘RB’ on the 2024 entry list. When asked about these speculations and his own role, Marko remained non-committal. “The decisions are still open, including what I will do next,” he stated. “My current contract runs until the end of 2024.”
The passing of Dietrich Mateschitz over a year ago has evidently changed the dynamics of decision-making at Red Bull. Marko acknowledged the expanded circle of influence, which now includes Mark Mateschitz, Thai stakeholders, and Oliver Mintzlaff. “The way we used to make decisions with Dietrich was unique,” he reflected, indicating a shift from the previous straightforward decision-making process.
Adding to the complexity is Max Verstappen’s support for Marko, indicating he wouldn’t accept his mentor’s ousting lightly. “This is a complex topic,” Marko admitted. “Of course, I also have an obligation to Red Bull and Max. Nevertheless, the overall package has to fit.”
