Disgraced former Masters champion Angel Cabrera has made his first start in a professional golf tournament since being released from prison.
Angel Cabrera, the disgraced former Masters champion, has returned to professional golf after his release from jail.
Making his first start at the Abierto del Litoral in Argentina, Cabrera shot a level par 71 in the opening round, with three birdies and three bogeys.
Despite his rusty short game, Cabrera remained in high spirits throughout the tournament’s first day of play, as reported by Golfweek.
Now 54 years old, Cabrera expressed his desire to return to the senior circuit after his last start on the PGA Tour Champions in 2020.
However, it’s important to note that Cabrera’s return to the sport follows a 30-month imprisonment for domestic violence offences against two previous girlfriends, Cecilia Torres Mana and Micaela Escudero. Torres Mana shared her experience of abuse, highlighting Cabrera’s demeaning behavior towards women.
After being arrested in Brazil and extradited, Cabrera faced a highly publicized trial in his homeland, where he denied but was ultimately convicted of the charges.
Despite his troubled past, Cabrera is determined to make a comeback in the world of golf.
His coach Charlie Epps previously explained Cabrera is trying to obtain a visa so he can travel to the U.S. and apply to be reinstated by the PGA Tour Champions.
Cabrera is best known for winning the 2007 U.S. Open and the 2009 Masters.
