At the latest FIA Prize-Giving Gala, Oscar Piastri was honoured as the Rookie of the Year – the second time he has sealed the honour in his racing career.
Oscar Piastri was named FIA Rookie of the Year after his first season in Formula 1.
Piastri joined McLaren’s campaign after spending the 2022 season on the sidelines as an Alpine reserve.
Australian driver has had a successful debut year in F1 despite McLaren’s difficult start to the season.
Woking-based team faced competition from the back of the grid in the early races But then the machine was successfully developed to get on the podium.
Piastri finished on the podium twice during the season and also secured sprint pole position and victory in Qatar.
His performance was recognized following his title-winning 2021 F2 season, helping him win the FIA Rookie of the Year award for the second time in his career.
“If we can start next year the way we finished, we should be in good shape this season,” Piastri said at the ceremony.
“I really enjoyed my rookie season in F1.
I hope it will be the last rookie season of my career.”
Piastri is the first F1 rookie to win the award since Alex Albon in 2019 and joins Charles Leclerc as a two-time winner of the honour.
