Jon Rahm has been heavily linked with making a shock move to LIV Golf, and a further report suggests the Masters champion could be followed by two more PGA Tour stars
Jason Day and Adrian Meronk could both follow Jon Rahm in joining LIV Golf, with the Spaniard backed to become the breakaway league’s next big-money signing.
In recent weeks, Rahm has been connected to a surprise move to the LIV setup, where a £450 million signing fee is reportedly on the table. The Daily Telegraph reported that the Masters champion may not be the only Tour player considering a move, as speculation about his future continues to grow.
The report reveals that former major champion Day, and four-time DP World Tour winner Meronk could also follow suit, although there is still ‘nothing concrete’ when it comes to Rahm’s deal with the breakaway league.
Along with Rahm, the signing of Day would be another impressive coup for Greg Norman and co, with the Australian one of the most established players on the PGA Tour. Meronk too would prove to be a clever piece of business, with the Pole’s one of Europe’s top players, having recently received his card onto the PGA Tour.
Amid his own links to the Saudi-backed series, Masters champion Rahm has opted to remain silent on the topic. His fellow PGA Tour players have had their say though, including 15-time major champion Tiger Woods.”Hypothetically would it surprise me? Yes,” Woods said at last week’s Hero World Challenge.
“But there’s so many different things that have happened in the last, as you said, 48 hours but also in the last few weeks. Things have changed and will continue to change. Our deadline’s [for the framework agreement] coming up here soon, so there’s a lot of moving parts.
Former Masters champion Jordan Spieth also had his say on the matter, and believes the 29-year-old would be a huge loss to the PGA Tour. “Jon Rahm is one of the biggest assets that we have on the PGA Tour,” Spieth said. “So it would really be not very good for us in general, because we want to play against the best players in the world, and that’s what Jon is. I know there’s been some guys that have talked to him.
“I know he’s maybe weighing some decisions, maybe not. I really don’t know, so I don’t want to insult him and say he’s weighing decisions if he already knows he’s not or he is. That’s somewhat out of my control, in a way. Obviously, I could speak probably on behalf of 200-plus PGA Tour players in saying that we really hope that he’s continuing with us.”
On the opposite side of the adventure, those playing on the LIV circuit would obviously very much want to invite one of the world’s top entertainers onto their program for the 2024 mission. “It would be colossal for LIV Golf,” LIV star Joaquin Niemann guaranteed per The Sydney Morning Messenger.
Clearly, we have a ton of good players, yet Jon Rahm could be quite possibly of the best player ever, the manner in which he plays and all that he brings to the game. Assuming he comes it will be great; on the off chance that not, we’ll continue doing what we’re doing.”
