YANKEES MAKING PROGRESS IN JUAN SOTO TRADE TALKS WITH SAN DIEGO PADRES

The New York Yankees have not given up on signing star outfielder Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres. According to SNY’s MLB insider Andy Martino, the Yankees and Padres recently reached a breakthrough in negotiations that included “swapping” the names of players who could be included in a trade.

Soto will become a free agent after the 2024 MLB season, but the Padres are unlikely to sign Soto to a long-term contract as they want to cut spending.
This left the organization fielding calls from interested teams to avoid losing the 25-year-old for nothing next offseason.

The Yankees are considered one of the most aggressive suitors, having begun exploratory talks with the Padres shortly after the 2023 season. The San Diego team’s initial offer is believed to be significantly more than the Yankees are willing to give up, but there are hopes that negotiations between the two sides could come closer in the coming weeks.

Martino reported that the Yankees know Soto will be a one-year rental, but that won’t stop them from making a move on the three-time All-Star. The team wants to get back to the playoffs after a disappointing season and believes Soto can help them get there. There is no doubt that his appealing style of play will draw even more fans to the stands.

Soto finished the 2023 season with a .
275 batting average, his career-high 35 home runs, and 109 RBI. He won his third consecutive All-Star selection and his fourth Silver Slugger Award.
