Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff8 has revealed his future plans, insisting he is building a “structure for the future” but has no plans to move on from race day management. He also announced his intention not to participate.
Wolff handed leadership responsibilities to Jerome D’Ambrosio and communications chief Bradley Lord during the Grand Prix weekends in Japan and Qatar as he recovered from knee surgery.
It may be unusual not to see Wolff in the paddock, but he hopes to make it more regular as he works towards his future.
Wolff has announced his intention to delegate more responsibilities to his Mercedes colleagues and is looking to expand the scope of his leadership role within the team.
“The clear goal is to build for the future and that is my responsibility to the team,” Wolff said.
“What would it be like if a rock fell on my head?” That’s why I like to think that in a few years I won’t be running 24 races, I’ll only be running 15 races.
“But” it will still take many years. I saw myself playing this role for a long time.
I can’t imagine doing anything else.
“It was a really difficult decision for me in 2020 to decide whether to continue in sports or become a shareholder and return to the world of finance,” Wolff added.
“It was mentally and physically exhausting, but I still wanted to keep going. I feel like I’m contributing to the team in the crossover world of finance and motorsport, and I’m excited about both. I’m passionate.
Wolff previously described the Brazilian Grand Prix as “disastrous”, but is keen to achieve further success with Mercedes.
Wolff previously reiterated his promise to give Lewis Hamilton his eighth drivers’ world championship. If this statement is true, it suggests Wolff may stay in the sport for a while.
